Brainwave meditation has its roots in the seventies, when the Transcendental Meditation (TM) was in vogue (remember the Beatles - Maharishi connection?). In the time that studies were conducted in order to justify from a scientific perspective the amazing effects credited to meditation. The results were interesting to say the least.
This was known at the time that our brains generate electrical wave patterns known as brainwaves. The four models different (frequencies) are Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. They are measured in Hertz (Hz = cycles per second). We also know that:
- Waves brain beta (13-34 Hz) is the daily pattern of most of us. Anxiety and stress are more likely to occur in the high beta range.
- Alpha brainwaves (8 to 12 Hz) occur when we are relaxed and calm. You are in alpha brain waves when you daydream, by example, but also when they focus on the study of something that catches your eye.
- Theta brain waves (4 to 7 Hz) is a state of deep relaxation, regular sleep-specific. It is also a creative state when you get in a waking state. Supposedly works of art were created in this state.
- Delta brain waves (0.5 to 3 Hz) is the state of deep sleep which occurs soon after falling asleep.
This was discovered during these studies that Delta is also the brain wave obtained by meditators out during the meditative state deep. The key finding is relevant to meditation brain waves that external stimulation of the brain with such frequencies produce similar states of mind as is achieved through meditation.
From a technical standpoint, this external stimulus was produced by the sound: the desired frequency is the difference between the signal listening to each ear. For example, one ear received 100 Hz and 110 Hz others. This produces a difference of 10 Hz Alpha specific brain waves.
It was shown that the brain integrates the two signals also called binaural beats, in a process called brainwave entrainment or synchronization brain wave. The base frequency (100 Hz above) is called frequency.
The most important result of these studies was the fact that if done correctly, the exposure to these frequencies caused the brain to adapt by creating new neural connections (Read cabling) similar to that of many years of classical meditation practice.
This result is reinforced by the new (at that time) the concept of brain plasticity (neuroplasticity): the brain's ability to adapt to a new stimulus by creating new connections or reassigning specific function to different areas. Once considered that does not physically change the brain and has stagnated as "hardware" of the early stages of life. It has been demonstrated in other words the software can change the original hardware.
